The action and keys are comprised of a system of levers that work together to access the soundboard’s musical capabilities. When the geometric relationship between the levers is well designed the action and keys provide a seamless connection between player and piano.

Custom Action Balancing is a complex procedure of analyzing all the leverages, frictions and weights in the action system to determine where corrections will improve its function. This diagnosis allows for proper selection of parts that improve the action’s ability to carry specific predetermined amounts of hammer weight while providing for reasonable action regulation parameters and inertia control. The outcome of this procedure is a smooth, quick and reliable action response which is a joy to play.

For the Steinway D our custom designed action work includes a blended geometry between keys and action stack making for a super smooth response.
